They are asking Markham to send a copy of "Lincoln and Other Poems" and a copy of "The Man with the Hoe and other Poems" to A.W. Calhoun. He lives in Hopkinton, Iowa. They also are asking why a copy of "the Man with Hoe and other poems wasn't delivered. It was order by John Daniels, from Riverton, Illinois.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
